Crazy or Cool: Pool Ownership in Pennsylvania
- Katina Hunter

It goes without saying that the warmer the state, the more common it is to have a pool. When house hunting in Florida, purchasing a home without a pool is akin to buying a Pennsylvania home without a furnace!

The tables seem to be turning, however, regarding perception of value of such a luxury in our area. Almost 8% of homes in the West Penn Multi List are sold with a pool. Long-time pool owner, Rick Lepri, definitely appreciates the advantages.

“I’ve been able to watch my grandchildren learn to swim right before my eyes,” says Lepri. “weather permitting, they are swimming almost every day!”

Lepri’s family gathers at their 5-bedroom brick homestead in Neshannock Township every week. Their stunning inground pool is the setting of the family’s fondest memories.

Lepri continues, “I thoroughly enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces.”

Rick & Patty Lepri have quite the setup at 184 Presnar Drive. In addition to their three-car attached garage, they have an additional one-car garage that they use as a pool house. An extended overhang provides the ideal shaded area to enjoy while relaxing poolside.

Some are daunted by the maintenance that a pool entails, but Lepri says that the pros far outweigh the cons. With an annual cost of ownership of less than $200 a year, Lepri definitely sees the value.

“Don’t be afraid,” he says. Resources are very easy to come by. The internet is a wealth of knowledge that can quickly help you overcome any snags with your pool. Pool owners are also always happy to share tips & tricks. Lepri’s home is currently for sale & looks forward to passing along his pool knowledge to the new owners.

It’s like owning anything – just “do the general maintenance.” Lepri says that he only spends about an hour a week with minimal effort to keep the pool in tip-top condition.

The best advice Rick Lepri has to offer: “Enjoy your pool & the memories you’ll create.”
